How Does Sclerotherapy Work?

Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical procedure that treats varicose veins and spider veins through a series of injections. A sclerosing solution made from salt water, sugar, and alcohol is injected with a very fine needle directly into the blood vessel.

The solution irritates the lining of the vein wall, causing it to swell and eventually stick together. Over several weeks, the treated vein begins to fade and may become barely visible.

Spider Veins

Spider veins are more common in women than in men. Estrogen may play a role in their development, since puberty, birth control pills, pregnancy, and estrogen supplements may contribute to their appearance.

Spider veins may also develop due to tight-fitting clothing, trauma, excess weight, prolonged sitting or standing, and hereditary factors. They can also appear on the face and chest.

Sclerotherapy is considered both cosmetic and, for some patients, therapeutic. It is relatively painless and safe, and it does not require hospitalization or anesthesia.

Patients usually do not need time off work and can resume normal activities following treatment. Walking and low-impact aerobics are often recommended after treatment sessions.

The cost per session depends on the number of injections required. Sessions usually last between 10 and 15 minutes, during which patients receive multiple injections. The number of sessions depends on the amount of spider veins present.
