How Does It Work

Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical procedure which consists of the injection of varicose and spider veins. A sclerosing solution made up of salt water, sugar and alcohol is injected with a very fine needle directly into the blood vessel. The solution irritates the lining of the vein wall causing it to swell and later, to stick together. Over a period of a few weeks, the vein starts to fade and eventually becomes barely visible.

Spider veins are more common in women than in men. The hormone estrogen may play a role in their development because puberty, birth control pills, pregnancy and estrogen supplements seem to bring them on. They may also occur as a result of tight-fitting clothes, trauma, overweight, prolonged sitting or standing. The main reason however, seems to be hereditary. Spider veins also occur commonly on the face and chest regions.

The procedure of sclerotherapy is considered to be both cosmetic and for some, therapeutic. It is relatively painless and safe, and does not require hospitalization or anesthesia. Patients do not require time off work and can resume their usual activities following treatments. Walking and low impact aerobics are recommended after the sessions.

The cost per session depends on the number of injections. The sessions last between ten and fifteen minutes at which time patients receive multiple injections. The number of sessions required depends on the amount of spider veins present.

NOTE:
Some "Extended Health Care" Insurance Plans may cover part of the cost of the procedure and for Compression Support Stockings. Large and Painful varicose veins can also be treated by sclerotherapy. Depending on the size of the varicose veins/ohip may pay for the treatment. This will be explained at the consultation.
